I know, I know – I haven’t posted for a while! I’ve been burning the candle at both ends and something had to give – my paycheck, my parenting, or my blog… And while I did model today for the first time in weeks, it was at an art school for students who were drawing their mid-term exam. Yep, three hours in the same, boring standing pose.
But here’s what has been making me laugh… Every time I check my statistics on my blog, they’re within 5-10 hits of the same number, whether I have posted or not. And one day, for no apparent reason at all, they tripled – yup, even without a new post.
Anyway, thought I would check in and say hello anyway, although it doesn’t seem to matter much if I do!
Well, I’ve been checking at least once a day to see if there have been any new posts. I’m still waiting to hear the story about the time you modeled after eating Mexican food.
Ha! Okay, the Mexican food story – it’s not what you would think. I can usually tolerate spicy food pretty well. But, what I’ve realized about everyone I’ve worked for is that they’re exceeding polite. Some people are a little more outgoing and talkative, some are reserved, but I’ve yet to have someone really irritate me. How does this relate to salsa and beans? Well, when I’m standing up there – or you know, chatting someone up in the hallway while wearing my little robe – I can really start to wonder if they’re thinking something but keeping it to themself… such as, Wow, what’s that stuck in her teeth? or, Hmmm, perhaps a deodorant change? The day that I had Mexican food caused these ponderings to reach an oppressive level – I was actually wondering if my belly was poofed out or if my pores were sweating cayenne pepper. I kept going into the bathroom on my break to figure out if i needed a hygiene adjustment but couldn’t find anything wrong, so I eventually just got over it, but it was definitely not my favorite session. Anyway, now ya know…
Thanks. I was, of course, imagining deafening stomach rumbling coming from the model stand followed by a headlong dash to the bathroom at the first break. But it’s nice to have you back online even if your story wasn’t Halloween material.
I haven’t modeled since August, but I do have two gigs coming up in the next few weeks. How’s your fall shaping up?
Ha! I’m in the part of the country getting hit with a Nor’easter (I feel like I’m in the 18th century whenever I hear that term) so it feels like fall is plum over and we’re in winter. But good otherwise – and hey, maybe I will have some bad enchiladas another time… BTW sending you a message via email in just a sec…
I check in a couple of times a day to see if there’s anything new. I’m glad there is now, even if it’s only a hello. We got hit by the storm too, but it’s melting now. Lots of people around here lost power, and the streets around here are a mess with fallen trees, branches and power lines. I had four modeling assignments in the last month, all portraits. I guess I’m the king of the portrait models now. And I like to snack on power bars before a session…
Hi, it’s nice to hear from you! Power Bars are always good. I also like Luna bars but they have been marketed so heavily toward women that I don’t know if men are willing to eat them…
I check every day or so to see if theres anything new. I’m pretty happy, I’ve gotten booked for 5 sessions for a portrait class that will start this Wednesday and today just got a booking for an open drawing figure session in a couple weeks. I’m also starting to go through the websites of the areas various schools to see if the spring semester class schedules are announced to see if I need to start contacting other schools / instructors yet.
I agree artists / students are very polite. When I tell people I model, I tell them that everyone should treat people the way artists treat their models.
Do you notice that you get more comments from portrait modeling compared to figure modeling? When I do a portrait session, I always hear about how nice my cheekbones, eye sockets, browline is (funny, never really thought of those areas before) But for a figure session, not so much. I’m not looking for compliments, don’t get me wrong, I’m just noticing that teh artists seem to go out of their way to not call attention to your features when you chat with them on breaks. What do you all think?
That’s a funny observation but it’s probably because complimenting someone’s figure is walking on thin ice – at least for a woman! I had someone tell me they liked my “core” once and that’s about as specific as they’ll get. Otherwise the compliments tend to be about my poses or my ability to hold still. Hmmm, so you have great eye sockets?
I was surprised at hearing that one. I guess if youve been painting for a couple decades or so, you really get to study and know the human facial structure
I like Luna Bars too. I was just using Power Bar as a generic term for that kind of thing.
